The beloved air show usually takes place every other year, but was canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic. After a four-year hiatus, officials are thrilled to announce the return of the show to the Utah skies this year. Organizers say the concert is one of the "largest attendance military-sponsored concerts in the country, drawing crowds of more than 500,000 spectators over two days, with an overall economic impact of more than $50 million."

"We are fortunate to have tremendous support from Utah communities for Hill Air Force Base," said Lt. Col. Jay Michaels, commander of the 75th Operations Support Squadron and director of the Hill Air Show. "While the Hill Air Show serves to showcase how the Air Force and our sister services support our nation's defense, it also serves as a 'thank you' to our communities for their continued support."

This year's theme is "Innovate, Accelerate, Thrive: The Air Force at 75," a way to commemorate the service, which turns 75 on September 18.

This year's visitors will enjoy air shows featuring a wide variety of civil and military aircraft, including US Air Force Thunderbirds, the Hill Air Force F-35A Lightning II Demonstration Team, helicopters, fighters, bombers, transports bulk cargo, fuel and more.

A variety of military ground transport and combat vehicles will also be on display, along with various vendors and agents from various institutions, organizations and associations.

Lieutenant Colonel Jay Michaels, commander of Hill's 75th Operations Support Squadron, said the Warriors Over the Wasatch Air and Space Show will take place in 2022 and is scheduled for June 25-26.

A decades-old tradition in northern Utah, the air show takes place every two years and is one of the largest air shows in the country. It is the largest single event in Utah, with participants coming from across the United States and Canada. During the show, the normally secure base opens its gates to the public and tens of thousands of visitors converge on the facility's flight line. During the 2018 show, base officials estimated that more than 565,000 visitors attended the two-day performance - a number about 15,000 more than the show's previous record attendance of 550,000.

Though the next show is still a year away, Michaels said planning has already begun, with officials expecting record attendance.

"With everything that's happened in the last year (with the pandemic), we're expecting even bigger crowds," Michaels said.

Michaels said it normally takes 800 volunteers every day to run the two-day show. A planning group of about 60 people has already been formed, divided into committees that will deal with individual aspects of the show. Michaels said the usual headliner, the US Air Force Thunderbirds, is already booked for the show, as is the Air Force's Hill-based F-35 aerial demonstration team.

Kevin Ireland, executive director of the Utah Air Show Foundation, said that other acts have been booked (and will continue to be booked), but those names will be released at a later date as part of the show's marketing plan.

The Utah legislature typically allocates $200,000 to the show each time it is performed. According to legislative documents from the 2019 general session, the show provides an estimated $50 million economic impact to northern Utah, drawing many visitors to the area and sponsoring hotels, restaurants and other local businesses. Ireland said the foundation typically raises between $600,000 and $700,000 in private funds to run the program.

With the 2020 event canceled amid the pandemic, Michaels said safety remains a top priority for the show as officials plan. He said the pandemic situation will continue to be monitored, but until the event gets closer, it's impossible to predict how it might affect the show.

During the 2018 show, the Utah Department of Transportation readjusted the traffic lights near the hill to provide more green light time on major roads in and around the base, and the Utah Transit Authority's FrontRunner passenger train served the show in both days, with trains running every day. 30 minutes and bus running between base and Clearfield FrontRunner station. In 2018, UTA said more than 14,000 people used FrontRunner to access the program.

Ireland has said similar arrangements will be in place in 2022 and urged the public to consider the public transport options that will be available.

"Obviously the Hill wasn't designed to be a parking lot - it was designed to be a functional Air Force base," Ireland said. “So we want people to plan ahead and use public transport. People did that in 2018 and the show went off without a hitch.”
