121 Area Code Usa - Zip codes 916 and 279 are California landline codes that serve Sacramto, the state capital and most of its counties. Area Code 916 was one of the first three area codes created in California in October 1947. It originally covered most of Northern California, but zoning reduced its coverage to the greater Sacramto area. Area Code 279 started providing service in March 2018 to reduce tedious calls in Area Code 916.
The purpose of the historical region is in the north of the state. In 1950, as part of the development of the California Area Code, 916 was changed to cover the northeastern part of California from the Sierra Nevada to the Central Valley. This includes changing Sacramto from area code 415 to 916.
121 Area Code Usa
The area plan was gradually split on March 1, 1959. Area code 707 was created from the northwest. On November 1, 1997, it was canceled again. The northeast, including Redding, Yreka and Mount Shasta, became area code 530, reducing the planned area 916 to Sacramto and the immediate area. On the same day, Dyson moved back from 916 to 707. This split leaves 916 as the only area out of the 86 original area codes that does not cover part of its original area.

In 2017, the CPUC received the overlapping area code to be used in 2018, as all existing prefixes should be distributed in December 2018.
On February 9, 2017, the CPUC announced that the new overlapping area will have area code 279.
