The SIG Sauer P320 is a modular semi-automatic pistol manufactured by SIG Sauer, Inc., the American subsidiary of SIG Sauer.

It is a further development of the SIG Sauer P250, which uses a percussion mechanism instead of a double-action hammer system. The P320 can be loaded in 9×19mm Parabellum, .357 SIG, .40 S&W, .45 ACP, and 10mm Auto and easily converts from one caliber to another; a switch from .357 SIG to .40 S&W only requires one barrel change; a change from 9mm to .357 SIG or .40 S&W and back is done using a caliber change kit.

The P320 chambered in 9×19mm Parabellum was introduced to the North American market on January 15, 2014, followed by the compact .45 ACP model at the SHOT Show in January 2015.

On January 19, 2017, it was announced that a modified version of the SIG Sauer P320 had won the US Army's XM17 Modular Handgun System competition. The full-size model will be known as the M17 and the compact transport model will be known as the M18.

The P320 is designed for ambidextrous handling, with a catch lever on either side of the slide and user reversible magazine release, and all other controls are designed to be operated from either side. The weapon can be disassembled in the field without tools. In addition, the weapon can also be disassembled in the field without pulling the trigger, an added safety feature to prevent negligent discharge of the weapon.

The US Army's requirements for the new pistol included the idea that an existing model of pistol would be preferred over the RRP modular pistol system known as the XM17 Procuremt. SIG Sauer presented a P320 with a number of modifications and submitted it to the XM17 Modular Handgun System competition.

On January 19, 2017, it was announced that the SIG Sauer P320 MHS variant had won the United States Army Modular Pistol System Trials. The P320 will be known as the M17 (full size) and M18 (compact) in US military service. Although the gun remains chambered in 9×19mm Luger rather than larger caliber, the contract allows the services to purchase SIG Sauer's proposed XM1152 Full Metal Jacket and XM1153 Special Purpose ammunition.

In May 2017, the Army announced that the first unit to receive the M17 would be the 101st Airborne Division by the end of the year. At the same time, the rest of the U.S. military revealed that it planned to acquire the pistol as well, making it the standard handgun for the U.S. military. The services plan to procure up to 421,000 weapons in total; 195,000 for the Army, 130,000 for the Air Force, 61,000 for the Navy (XM18 compact version only), and 35,000 for the Marines.

On November 17, 2017, Soldiers of the 101st Airborne received the first XM17 and XM18 pistols, with over 2,000 pistols delivered. The XM17 has better accuracy and ergonomics and a tighter spread than the M9. It will also be deployed more widely and distributed to fire and squadron leaders; while Special Forces would dual-arm all its members with a pistol and rifle, previously junior leaders of regular infantry units were not allowed to carry handguns, but the policy has changed to give them more choices and options in close combat situations. All Army units are expected to replace the M9 with the M17 within ten years.

Early production models of the P320 were found to have a "fall safety" issue if the weapon was lowered at a certain angle, potentially causing it to discharge. SIG Sauer has since reassembled the P320 to make it drop resistant and offers a voluntary upgrade program for early P320s.

Aside from its teething problems, the P320 has proven to be an extremely reliable pistol for civilian, law enforcement and military use. Many police departments in the United States and around the world have started issuing P320s to their officers.

In 2019, approximately 400 P320s were purchased for the Canadian Joint Task Force 2 (JTF-2) special forces unit, but have been decommissioned and the previous P226 pistols (also manufactured by SIG Sauer) have been recovered after a failed firing where a soldier was injured during training in November 2020; JTF-2 was the only Canadian military unit to operate the P320.

In June 2021, an engineering investigation found that the firing was due to "a partial pull of the trigger by a foreign object combined with the simultaneous movement of the slide [...] that allowed a shot to be fired while the gun was still was always holstered" and that the use of a holster designed for a different weapon was a contributing factor; the P320 itself was not at fault, nor were there any issues with how it was obtained by Canadian defense officials (as questions had been raised as to whether these officials were aware of the drop's security concerns). However, the weapons would remain in storage after a third-party safety evaluation.

The safety assessment and other procedures related to firing were completed in June 2022, with the decision to restore the P320 by the end of that month.

In January 2019, SIG Sauer announced the XCompact pistol as the latest effort in the X Series range.

The XCompact size gripper module is the smallest gripper module SIG currently offers, no sub-compact X-series gripper module has been released to date.

XFIVE Legion, released in late July/early August 2019, is considered the flagship of the P320 platform, adding weight and functionality. The TXG grip module has tungsten molded directly into the polymer along with an attachable magazine well. It comes standard with Hning Group aluminum base bearings and a flat skeletonized trigger. The full 9mm slide has clear notches in the top to reduce weight and assist with recoil. It is also optics ready thanks to the removal of the rear sight plate mounting. The scope cut is the Delta Point/Romeo 1 Pro profile, but can accommodate multiple scopes via adapter plates. .

The SIG P320-XTMAX is an auto-chambered 10mm X-Series variant of the P320, released in 2022. It features an X-Series grip module, bull barrel, X-Series flat trigger and a stainless steel slide with Nitron finish with a recess for mounting the optical sight. The magazine capacity is 15 rounds. Weighs 33 ounces (936 grams), has a 5" (127 mm) bull barrel, 8.5" (216 mm) overall length, 5.6" (142 mm) overall height, 1.3" overall width inches (33 mm) and a viewing radius of 6.8 inches (173 mm).

The SIG P320MAX is a sporty variant of the P320, designed in 2021 for use by competition shooters. The pistol features ROMEO3 MAX sights and a tungsten-infused TXG grip module, weighs 43.5 ounces (1.23 kilograms), has a competition-grade 5-inch (130 mm) barrel and an overall length of 8.5 inches (220mm).

In late July 2017, the Dallas Texas Police Department ordered all personnel to stop transporting the P320 to launch an investigation.

It was feared that the weapon could discharge if dropped and the rear of the slide hit the ground at a 33-degree angle. The problem was thought to be related to trigger weight; some triggers were so heavy that they essentially kept moving due to inertia after the gun hit the ground. Internet publications, such as TheTruthAboutGuns.com, conducted independent tests that seemed to confirm possible layoffs (at a rate of 40%).

On August 8, 2017, SIG Sauer released a notice that it would update all P320s to resolve the issue.

The update is described on the company's website as: "an alternate design that reduces the physical weight of the trigger, lever and firing pin while adding a mechanical decoupler".

The Wisconsin State Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police recommended in mid-September 2022 that state police departments stop using the weapon, claiming that three Milwaukee police officers were injured or that their partner's service guns have been firing since 2020 without any to pull the trigger.

That is for a gun with a removable frame. Steyr Arms has applied for a preliminary and permanent injunction against SIG Sauer selling such firearms. On March 11, 2020, the United States District Court for the District of New Hampshire ruled that SIG Sauer had not violated Steyr's patts and denied all motions.

A lawsuit related to the aforementioned drop-fire issue filed in April 2018 in the United States District Court for the Western District of Missouri resulted in a class action settlement in February 2020.

In September 2019, an Arizona gun owner who purchased a P320 in September 2016 filed a class action lawsuit.

And that the upgrade offered "would still not fully compensate him for the greatly reduced resale value of his gun."

A Notice of Process was issued in May 2020 and preliminary instructions expired on October 5, 2021; in January 2021, the deadline for provisional declarations was revised to February 1, 2022.
