On 12 December 1985, 248 soldiers assigned to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team and eight crew members of 1285 died in a plane crash in Gander, Newfoundland, Canada.

“Some think that soldiers are bad warriors because of their combat experience; but the men and women we mourn today were peacekeepers, said former US President Ronald Reagan on December 16, 1985, at Gander's memorial service at Fort Campbell. were proud; they met a destiny and a potential they never had."

This loss was one of the most devastating in the history of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team.

Soldiers from the 2nd Brigade Combat Team were on their way home after being overseas for six months on a peacekeeping mission in the Sinai Peninsula. They stopped in Gander, Newfoundland to refuel and returned to Fort Campbell to spend time with loved ones before the holidays. The plane crashed shortly after takeoff, killing all 256 people on board.

During CAMLFEX, Col. Ed Matteides, commander of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), addressed the strike troops about the Gander downing.

"Today we remember the 248 soldiers of Task Force 3-502 IN who died in the crash of Arrow Air Flight 1285, a group of heroic predecessors," Mattheidess said. "They never had the opportunity to hug and kiss the children and spouses they left behind at Fort Campbell, so we take a few moments today to remember and reflect."

The same drive of the 248 shock troops who were killed is still evident in the dedication of the shock troops who participated in CAMLFEX.

CAMLFEX is a culminating event that requires months of training and preparation. It includes air assaults, sling loading operations, direct and indirect fire support, demolitions, fire support and trench maneuvering. CAMLFEX is designed to increase the readiness and lethality of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team.

Through the efforts of Strike Soldiers, CAMLFEX has enabled Soldiers to develop the skills they need to win future battles.

The ceremony will be immediately followed by the "Romania/US Air and Land Show", which will showcase the joint capabilities of the US and Romanian military.

Elements of the 101st Airborne Division (Airborne) began arriving at Mikhail Kogalnitsa Air Base in June. Here, troops support the U.S. Army V Corps' mission to bolster NATO's Eastern Flank and conduct multinational exercises with partners on the European continent to reassure allies and partners and deter further Russian aggression. FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. -- The 101st Airborne Division's 2nd Brigade Combat Team bid farewell to Col. Joseph Escandon and saluted Col. Michael Kovacevich during a June 28 change of command ceremony.

"It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as commander of this outstanding organization," said Escandon. "I'm proud of this team and we're ready to fight, strike like eagles and dominate our opponents tonight."

During Escandon's two years in command, 2BCT flew missions on three continents. The strike force is currently deployed on the African continent as part of the Regional Joint Force mission and works with the Armed Forces of Ukraine as the Joint Multinational Training Group - Ukraine. The brigade previously completed a national integration assessment at Fort Bliss, Texas in 2017 and a rotation at the Joint Readiness Training Center in March 2018.

Escandon will travel to Washington to monitor the lethality, survivability, resilience and readiness of infantry units in the joint forces established by post-Escand Defense Secretary James Mattis.
